Minnie Mouse Toddler Hat

Last year for my daughter's birthday, I crocheted her a hat to go with the theme of her party. This year I decided to do the same and  make this an annual tradition. The hats are not necessarily for cold weather (we live in the south) but more so for pictures. I take her picture with her hat and send them with the invitations. So this year I made her a Minnie Mouse hat. I scoured the internet for a free pattern and came up empty handed, so I made my own and I am sharing it with you.  

The Minnie Mouse Toddler Hat Pattern is now complete! I am so excited to share with this adorably versatile hat with you. With this pattern you can not only make Minnie but you can also make a Mickey version. If your child is anything like mine, they will NEED both! Minnie MouseToddler Hat

Materials Needed

~ Hook size: 5.0/ H

~ 4 Ply Worsted Weight yarn (black & pink or red)

~ Large white buttons

**I typically make the base of my hats off of Repeat Crafter Me’s Owl Hat Pattern. However for this pattern, I changed colors at a different time and added more rows.

Hat

Magic Ring, Chain 2, 9 DC in magic ring, join to first DC, ch 2

Round 2: 2 DC in each around, join to first DC, ch 2 (18 DC)

Round 3: 2 DC, DC in next, repeat around, join, ch 2 (27 DC) 

Round 4: 2 DC, DC in next 2, repeat around, join, ch 2 (36 DC)

Round 5: 2 DC, DC in next 3, repeat around, join, ch 2 (45 DC)

Round 6: 2 DC, DC in next 4, repeat around, join, ch 2 (54 DC)

Round 7-9: DC around (54 DC)

Change color, join and ch 2

Round 10-13: DC around (54 DC) do not fasten off, begin on first earflap as written below for this size

Earflaps

- Earflap 1

Row 1: Chain 1, sc in next 10, chain 1, turn- (10)

Row 2: sc decrease, sc in next 6, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (8)

Row 3: sc across (8)

Row 4: sc decrease, sc in next 4, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (6)

Row 5: sc across- (6)

Row 6: sc decrease, sc in next 2, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (4)

Row 7: sc across - (4)

Row 8: Make 2 sc decreases, chain 1, turn (2)

Row 9: sc decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

-Earflap 2

** I lay my hat flat with the 1^st earlflap on the underside for placement of the second earflap. Repeat Crafter Me’s Puppy Hat Pattern has great pictures to show placement.

Row 1: Chain 1, sc in next 10, chain 1, turn- (10)

Row 2: sc decrease, sc in next 6, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (8)

Row 3: sc across (8)

Row 4: sc decrease, sc in next 4, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (6)

Row 5: sc across- (6)

Row 6: sc decrease, sc in next 2, sc decrease, chain 1, turn- (4)

Row 7: sc across - (4)

Row 8: Make 2 sc decreases, chain 1, turn (2)

Row 9: sc decrease, fasten off, weave in ends

After both earflaps are done, I like to sc around the hat and the earflaps for a more finished look.

Braids

For the braids I just cut off 3-5 long strands of each color (approx.: 28-36 in long).  Fold strands in half and loop through the last space in the earflap. Braid the strands and then knot and cut so the strands are even.

Ears x2

Magic circle, ch 2

Round 1: 10 dc in the circle, join, ch 2- (10)

Round 2: 2 dc in each st around, join, ch 2- (20)

Round 3: 2 hdc in the first st and 1 hdc in the next, repeat around- (30)

Fasten off and leave a long tail so you can attach them onto the hat.

Bow 

**Make as large or as small as you want 

Chain a length you feel is large enough for the size bow you would like to make.

hdc in the 2^nd ch from the hook then hdc across, ch 2

hdc, ch 2 until you get to the height you feel will look best

**Remember you will sc around the edge so take that into account with the height of the bow

Fasten off and leave a long tail so you can attach it onto the hat

Wrap a long piece of yarn around the center to pinch your rectangle together and make the center of your bow.

For the bow I made, I cannot remember the exact counts since I eyeball it but from looking at the picture of the hat I will give an idea of what they could have been and maybe that will help some of you.

Chain 24,

Row 1: hdc in 2 ch from the hook, hdc across, ch 2- (22)

Row 2-6: hdc across, ch 2- (22)

sc around, fasten off

Leave a long tail to attach it to the hat.

Wrap a long piece of yarn around the center to pinch your rectangle together and make the center of your bow.

Last but not least, sew your large white buttons on the front of your hat as the finishing touch (you can do the back too if you would like). 

**You can also make a red version of Minnie with this pattern or a Mickey Mouse hat by just switching colors :)
